Player of the Year

Alex Sobczak, Mercy, Catcher

Alex Sobczak of Mercy High Schooll in Farmington Hills was named Miss Softball by the Michigan High School Coaches Association.

Sobczak, who will play next year at the University of Michigan, was a four-year starter for Mercy, hitting 40 career home runs with a .524 career average. She hit three home runs in a game as a freshman, then hit 17 her sophomore season, the third most home runs in a single season in state history.

Sobczak made outstanding contact, striking out only 23 times in 475 plate appearances during her career. She hit .440 this season with six home runs and 33 RBI, getting walked 39 times, including 18 intentionally.

She helped Mercy make to the MHSAA Division 1 semifinal round.

Paige Churchfield, Swan Valley, 1B

Paige Churchfield helped lead the Vikings to the state final as a freshman and as a sophomore and to the regional final the last two seasons.

In 2015, she was the only senior and team captain for Swan Valley, and she led by example by having an all-state year.

She hit at a .528 clip for the Vikings, clubbing 15 home runs and a school record 77 RBI.

In four varsity seasons, Churchfield set school records for career home runs (32) and RBI (187) and finished second in doubles with 42.

Kelsie Popp, Bay City Western, 2B

Only a junior, Kelsie Popp has already verbally committed to Central Michigan University. A rock-solid second baseman, she fielded at a .933 clip. At the plate, she tallied 17 doubles, five triples, and four home runs. She batted .471 with 39 RBI and a .798 slugging percentage.

Amariah Wright, Frankenmuth, Pitcher

Amariah Wright led Frankenmuth to the Division 2 state final, where the team lost to Wayland. The Eagles finished the season 37-4-1. This was the third final appearance for the Eagles softball team, which won it all in 1991 and finished as runner-up in 2011.

Nicole Bauer, Unionville-Sebewaing, P

A dominant force in Unionville-Sebewaing’s state championship run, Nicole Bauer earned first-team all-state honors. The hard-throwing right-hander posted a 26-0 record with a 0.38 ERA. She rang up 191 strikeouts and walked 20 in 146.0 innings of work. A Division I college prospect, she also batted .463 with 46 RBI and 20 extra-base hits.

Courtney Cooley, Ithaca, 3B

The Yellowjackets had a fantastic season, especially offensively, and Courtney Cooley played a major role in it. The first-team all-state selection hit .470 on the season with 10 doubles, two triples, 32 RBI, and 39 runs scored. She went 55 for 117 at the plate and worked 21 walks.

Riley Terwilliger, Sacred Heart Academy,  3B

Riley Terwilliger finished the season with a .461 batting average, seven doubles, six triples, 47 hits, .491 OBP, 1.138 OPS, 17 RBI, 21 steals, .and a .924 fielding percentage

Cassidy Tucker, Coleman, 2B

Cassidy Tucker helped Coleman win its first conference title since 2010, its first district title since 2009, and its first regional crown since 2006. This first-team all-state selection belted out a .493 batting average with 10 doubles, nine triples, four home runs, and 68 hits in 138 at bats. She scored 64 runs, drove in 57, and stole 28 bases in 31 attempts while fielding .979 at second base. Coleman advanced to the Division 4 quarterfinal round and finished with a record of 33-8.

Rachel Vieira, Clarkston, SS

One of the state’s best overall shortstops the past four years, Rachel Vieira closed out her high school career by having a monster season on offense, batting .571 with 10 home runs, 55 runs, and 67 RBI. She signed with Central Michigan University and was named first team all-state in Division 1. Vieira was also a vacuum at shortstop defensively.

Lindsay Reed, Holt, Utility

Holt senior Lindsay Reed will continue her college career at Davenport University. Reed was a four year varsity starter and played second base and pitched for the Rams.
