Tina Walsh is one of the race organizers for Joana’sMiles 5k Trail Run/Walk and 1 mile Fun Run at Imerman Memorial Park in Saginaw on Aug. 6.

“After my daughter Joana passed away on October 4, 2013, I established the Joana D. McKeoun Memorial Scholarship through the Saginaw Community Foundation, and all proceeds of this race will benefit this scholarship,” Walsh said. “She was an avid runner (cross country and track) for White Pine as well as Heritage High School, so this is a very fitting event.”

Registration begins at 8 a.m. The fun run is 9 a.m. The 5K run is at 9:20.

Joana was an avid runner and participated in Cross Country and Track and Field for both White Pine and Heritage High School. Tina Walsh, says hosting this annual event is a great way to honor her daughter and meeting the recipients of the scholarship for the past three years has been a great pleasure.

“I remember seeing Joana’s face light up when she found out that she was awarded a scholarship, and being able to pay it forward in Joana’s name is wonderful. Seeing where our money is going and talking to the students who have received Joana’s scholarship has been a very rewarding experience,” Walsh said.

“I am happy we were able to keep the entry fee low at only $5.00 per participant,” Walsh added. “This will be a no frills event, but we will provide an accurately measured course and an award for the overall male and female winners. There will also be a limited amount of race shirts for sale for $10 each, and Joana’s two youngest siblings will host a lemonade stand and bake sale. This will be a very inexpensive and fun family event you don’t want to miss.”
