Bree Purvis decided to take up powerlifting two years ago and she’s extremely glad she did.

The St. Johns sophomore competed in the APA-WPA World Powerlifting Championships Oct. 6-9 in Clackamas, Ore. She already holds four state records. She was previously a cheerleader, but decided, at her mother’s urging, to try powerlifting. Earlier this year, in the Michigan Open Championships at the Iron House Fitness Center in St. Johns, she was able to qualify for the world tournament after setting state records in the squat (105 pounds), bench press (85 pounds) and deadlift (180) pounds in the 148-pound weight class.

She also had the state record (115 pounds) in the 132-pound weight class.

Purvis, 16, placed first for her age group, and third in her weight class of 132 pounds.

“My mom felt I need to try something,” Purvis said. “I decided to try this.”

She’s especially been excelling in bench and squat. She added that she usually tries out about four days a week at a local gym.

Purvis said she’s not sure if there’s anyone else locally doing powerlifting. She basically focuses on her own.

At the world event, “I’m pleased with how I did,” she said. “I did my personal best.”

Purvis pointed to the factor she feels is the key to being an effective powerlifter.

“It’s your mindset,” she said. “It’s all on how you think you did.”

Purvis is focusing on getting toned right now, but plans to continue in various competitive powerlifting events.

Powerlifting is her only sport but Purvis especially enjoys it. The aspect of gaining muscles has especially been an enjoyable aspect. It’s made her stronger.”

Her powerlifting has gotten a lot of positive comments for Purvis from her friends.

“They think it’s cool,” she said.
