It may be winter, but Shepherd’s Morgan Yates is already thinking of golf.

In November, Yates signed a letter of intent to play golf at Shepherd.

“The reason I chose to continue my golf and educational career at Alma College is because of the ‘personal touch,’ that the coaches, collegiate staff and students extended to me,” Yates said. “I love my small town atmosphere in Shepherd, and that is how I feel when I visit Alma College. People are friendly and accepting, which is very important to me. The interest with Alma College began through conversations with my high school coach and Mr. Charlie Goffnett, who is the assistant coach at Alma College. The interaction with the Alma College coaches was comfortable, genuine and felt real. My family, my coach and myself, all felt that the choice of Alma College women’s golf was a great fit.

“When thinking about going to college, I considered the possibilities of Central Michigan University and Olivet. My love of golf played a huge factor in my decision about college. The personal relationships that developed during the season with Alma College, made a huge impact on my college choice. Alma College felt right. My role at Alma College will be to develop into a stronger and smarter golf teammate. In the classroom, my role will be to continue my educational goals. It is my goal to be a confident leader in both the classroom and on the course.”

Yates has already set her agenda for the transition to Alma golf.

“I plan to prepare for the next level by doing several things,” Yates said. “I will finish my high school academic education with strong, solid grades. To further my golf skills, I plan to practice, practice, practice. I plan to participate in golf opportunities over the spring and summer, along with increasing my physical fitness.

“The most exciting part about signing to play women’s golf at Alma College is because of the support I have received from my coaches, family and friends. I look forward to them being able to continue to follow me at the next level. My parents and grandparents were golfers and their love of golf shaped me as the golfer I am and wish to become.”
