ALMA – A blazing start and a strong finish paid off in a major way for the Alma boys basketball team. Jumping out to a 16-0 lead, Alma never looked back in the Division 2 regional semifinal game against unbeaten Bridgeport as the Panthers claimed a 64-56 win.
With the win, Alma improved to 18-3 for the season and moves on to Thursday’s regional championship game where it hosts Flint Powers Catholic at 7 p.m. at Alma.
Bridgeport entered the game with a 22-0 record but the Panthers were not intimidated as they connected on three, three-point shots in the first quarter. Leading 16-4 at the end of the first quarter, Alma upped the lead to 32-19 at halftime.
Bridgeport managed to get the deficit to single digits in the second half but Alma never surrendered the lead. Alma went 10-of-13 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the victory.
Brec Alward led a balanced Alma offense with 11 points followed by Case Martin, Brice Austin and Drew Humm with 10 points apiece.
