Portland hosted its second quad of the season on Friday. Liggett brought over a team led by nationally ranked William Cooksey. They finished 3rd in the state last year and may be even better now. Liggett had a perfect tournament and swept all of the flights. Portland finished in second place again. Liggett had all of the flight champions, but Portland did have 4 runners up. Alex Russman (2s), Kurt Kraczon/Jorgen Sonday (1d), Casey Smith/Kai Kipp (2d), and Dane Wildrom/Austin Getchell (4d) all finished second in their flight.
Coach Joel Cross: “This was a good day for us against some top ranked teams in the state. I was really impressed with how two of the singles players played. Alex Russman has made the jump from 2 doubles to 2 singles. These are totally different types of tennis and he looks like he’s been playing singles forever. Ethan Webert also looked really good at 4 singles. He played JV last year and really looks like a different player this year. I haven’t seen many players improve like he did over one year in all of my time coaching. Portland will host the PHS Quad II on Tuesday with Grant, Williamston, and Essexville-Garber.”
