The Frankenmuth Eagles Football team captured the MHSAA Division 5 Regional Championship with a 31 – 7 win over the Marine City Mariners at the Eagles home field.

Frankenmuth was  behind in the 1st quarter after a Mariners interception at mid field and two plays later, Marine City Quarterback Jeffery Heaslip connected with Charles Tigert on a 51 yard TD pass and a 7 – 0 lead.

Midway through the 2nd quarter, the Eagles tied the score on a Davin Reif 1 yard run and Ryan Brenner tacked on the PAT and the score was knotted at 7 – 7 which held until halftime. The 2nd half was all Eagles as the offense and defense dominated action.

On the first series of the 2nd half, Konnor Roche intercepted a Mariners pass and it took only two plays for Cole Lindow to sprint 38 yards and Frankenmuth led 14 – 7. On the ensuing possession, an Ethan Jacobs sack and a Marine City punt put the Eagles offense back in action. A 9=play, 57 yard drive was capped off by a Konnor Roche 13 yard run, upping the lead to 21 -7. At the 9:21 mark of the 4th quarter, Reif scored on a 20 yard scamper and a 28 – 7 lead.

Cole Jankoswski intercepted a Mariners pass on the next possesion and the Eagles drove deep into Marine City territory ending with a Ryan Brenner 25 yard field goal and the 31 – 7 final score. The Eagle defense was stellar limiting Marine City to 86 yards of offense and -12 yards rushing. Roche led the defense with 8 tackles and the twin towers of Ben Reinert and Jacobs pressured the Mariners QB all game long. The offense accumulated 422 yards of offense and 22 first downs. Lindow and Reif each reached the century mark with 150 and 129 yards rushing respecitvely.

The Eagles move on to the Division 5 Semi-Finals as they will host the defending Division 5 State Champion Lansing Catholic Central which defeated Grosse Ile 28 – 5. The game will be played next Saturday, January 16 at 1pm.
