It was a good start for the Beal City Aggies girls cross country team.

The Aggies won the first of three Highland Conference jamborees at Evart this week.

Beal City had a 119 score to finish ahead of McBain NMC 119-131.

Maggie Kolb and Emily Steffke led the Beal City attack, finishing fourth and fifth with times of 21:05 and 21:10. Hannah Neyer was ninth and Hayley Neyer was 18th in 21:59 and 23:11.

It is a season best,” Kolb said. “It’s not a personal best. I was getting over being sick. It was not as good as it could have been but I’m still happy with it.

Kolb wants to be in the low 19s before the season ends.

Rachel Schwerin was 21st in 23:36, Larissa Schwerin 33rd in 24:29 and Manisha Cole 54th in 28:10.

Beal City finished second in the boys competition with a 144 compared to 102 for Evart, which took the first four spots.

Nick Pung was fifth in 16:59 while Charlie Clark was eighth in 17:30, Brendan Carrick 12th in 18:26, Darrell Koehler 16th in 18:48, Elton Clark 17th in 18:51, James Kolb 28th in 19:38 and Zach Bellinger 33rd in 21:00.
