From Tina Walsh

If you are looking for a fun and inexpensive family event, consider spending just $5.00 per person to participate in the fourth annual Joana’sMiles 5k Trail Run/Walk or 1 mile Fun Run. Both events will take place at Imerman Memorial Park in Saginaw, MI on August 12, 2017 and wind through beautifully wooded and groomed trails along the scenic Tittabawassee River. All proceeds benefit the Joana D. McKeoun Memorial Scholarship, which is administered by the Saginaw Community Foundation and awarded to a graduating Heritage High School senior each year. It was established in 2013 in honor and in memory of Joana McKeoun, who graduated from Heritage High School in 2010 and passed away on October 4, 2013 after a five year battle with brain cancer.

Joana was an avid runner and participated in Cross Country and Track & Field for both White Pine and Heritage High School. Her mother, Tina Walsh, says hosting this annual event is a great way to honor her daughter and meeting the recipients of the scholarship for the past four years has been a great pleasure. “I remember seeing Joana’s face light up when she found out that she was awarded a scholarship, and being able to pay it forward in Joana’s name is wonderful. Seeing where our money is going and talking to the students who have received Joana’s scholarship has been a very rewarding experience.”

Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. on race day. The 1 mile Fun Run starts at 9:00 a.m. with the 5k Run/Walk following at 9:20 a.m.   Walsh says, “I am happy we were able to keep the entry fee low at only $5.00 per participant. This will be a no frills event, but we will provide an accurately measured course and an award for the overall male and female winners.  Just like in previous years, Joana’s two youngest siblings will also host a lemonade stand and bake sale. This will be a very inexpensive and fun family event you don’t want to miss.”

Shirts are available for pre-registered participants only. Pre-registration will be open through July 31, 2017 at www.raceentry.com.
